Some parents believe that begins when the first tooth erupts, but really should start from the first days of life of the little.

LAKEVILLE, SAVAGE AND MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA – Lots of new parents wonder about the right age to get their kids practicing good oral hygiene.

The truth is, an oral care regimen must begin before a child is capable of doing it on her own. It should begin shortly after birth, said Dr. Trudy Bonvino, a Lakeville and Minneapolis Invisalign expert who specializes in adult and child orthodontics.

After all, getting off to a good start can lead to a lifetime of healthy teeth.

“Good oral care should begin before a baby’s first teeth appear,” Bonvino said.

She offered several tips for parents to assist in making sure that their children’s teeth are healthy when they begin to come in, and they continue to stay that way as their children grow.

• Following feedings, wipe the infant’s gums with a soft washcloth.

• Use a soft-bristled toothbrush designed for infants with water only. It is important not to use toothpaste.

• Use a cleanser designed for cleaning an infant’s teeth and gums.
